This information was sent to the Alpine Community Network by the Alpine Historical Society – Please read the email below and the follow the LINK to View the VIDEO PROPOSAL for the “LIVING SIGN” (Alpine Welcome Sign)
(Original Email) – Alpine Historical Society Members,
Below is a link to a youtube video prepared by Tony Cheesman, the current President of the Alpine Kiwanis Club. In it, he explains his proposal to construct a “living sign”, an electronic banner, across Alpine Blvd by the Alpine Community Center. The sign can be used to Welcome people to Alpine, inform the community of upcoming events and hazardous fire, weather or traffic conditions.
The Board of the Alpine Community Center would be responsible for the electronic banner after its completion and received the income from the banner’s rental space. I am sure that you have many question about this project. Please watch the video which is about 14 minutes in length and your questions will be answered by this very informative video that Tony prepared to present his project to the community.
If you have any questions or comments, please direct them to Anthony Cheesman at acheesman@cox.net

I think it’s good to have our voices heard, however, unless you personally know the man who has proposed this, I think everyone should be kind enough not to slam him. This was an idea he thought was nice and was his personal outlook and opinion. Not EVERYONE is opposed to having a sign, but most people are.
Let’s state our case and not try to rip anyone apart… I think the planning dept will get the full impact of how the residents of the town feel.
Here’s hoping to see lots of us there in protest of the proposed sign! Bring your ideas, demands and big mouths. I haven’t seen one, not ONE, positive thing said or written re: “THE SIGN”, except from it’s creator, Cheeseman. Who does he think he is? Join me and others tonight and be heard! If we wanted to live in Vegas, by golly, we’d move to Vegas!! Not in our town!!
Note About the Next APG Meeting and the Welcome to Alpine Banner Sign – Submitted By Tom & Judy Meyers
Citizens of Alpine, many of you are aware that the Kiwanis club president is developing a plan to install an LED-lighted banner sign across Alpine Blvd. This sign would carry advertisements for local businesses and events. An earlier post on ACN provided a link to view a short video presentation of the sign. A number of you have expressed your opinion on the Alpine Community Network. Now you have a chance to express your opinion to the Alpine Community Planning Group. The next ACPG meeting is Thursday, July 28, at 6:00 pm at the Alpine Community Center. If you want to tell your local planners what you think about the sign, you should go to the meeting and request an opportunity to speak. Here are the ACPG guidelines for speaking during the Open Discussion portion of the meeting:
Any member of the public may address the group on topics pertaining to planning, zoning and land use which does not appear elsewhere on this agenda. Upon recognition by the Chairman, each speaker will be allowed up to three minutes to speak (organized/special presentations up to fifteen minutes). There can be limited discussion with no vote on any issue(s) so presented until such time as proper public notice is given prior to such discussion and vote.
Just like the Powerlink, if you don’t speak up you will have to live with what others decide.

I think the idea of a sign is nice–even a gateway arch type of sign. But the electronic sign is inappropriate for Alpine. If the community elects to move forward with a sign, it should be static and rustic–even a rusty looking steel sign might be nice if done correctly. Heck, you could even light it, just don’t go nuts with the whole RGB/Neon approach.
Also, the proposed location seems odd. I’m not sure that most people would actually see it. Two options that might be better would be across Tavern Rd between the Chase bank and Circle K (granted, this is a huge intersection), or out by the Albertson’s.
No Electronic signs in our “mountain town!”
I opposed the sign the moment that I saw the video. We have advertising everywhere we look including the gas pumps and check out stands. Please, let’s keep our town what it has always been intended to be, a quiet place in the country. I am against moving lights and flashing advertising over Alpine Blvd. It isn’t why I moved to Alpine.
I have always thought the work of the Alpine Kiwanis was helping there community.
Now it staring to look as if the current president wants to leave a legacy for him self with this sign idea.
I don’t believe that’s the goal of the Kiwanis to promote one individual.
You ” The Alpine Kiwanis” need to stop this idea and come up with some thing better then this sign over Alpine Blvd.
If you don’t stop this sign idea over Alpine Blvd.
Then the APG has to.
Thank You
I agree with the comments above that a static sign with a rustic feel is much more appropriate for Alpine. We are bombarded daily with electronic messages on our computers, phones, in our cars, etc. and the last thing we need when coming home to Alpine is one more reminder of this (really, what could be more depressing than coming home after a long day of work to an Amber alert, or notice of a fatal accident glaring at you overhead?) I also think a location closer to the center of town is better, such as near the Women’s club, where all the eucalyptus trees will be taken down.
I think the idea of an electronic sign over Alpine Blvd is horrible!! Everyone has been so vocal about the concern of losing the small town feel from the work that SDG&E is doing, this is so much worse than any of the improvements that have been proposed for Alpine Blvd! I feel a static rustic sign to welcome people would be much more appropriate. I hope the residents of Alpine have another chance to vote on this horrible idea before it becomes an eyesore in the middle of our town!
I think a static gateway sign for Alpine is a wonderful idea. But please no electronic signs.
I appreciate the effort that went into the preparation of the idea and the video, but I would strongly favor a static, rustic (wooden!) sign over the electronic bulletin board. Alpine’s character should be taken into consideration, and I believe this sign does not do that. To increase visibility for most people, both residents and people traveling through, I would suggest a location a bit farther west of the one proposed, i.e. much closer to the intersection with Tavern Rd, so that the sign would be visible almost as soon as you come off the freeway exit.
I think that a beautifully designed arch, with the name ALPINE on top and neon lit is a nice idea. Most welcome signs are gaudy and have an industrial look and feel to them. Even the one proposed for Alpine in the video looks like it belongs in an industrial area.
I also feel that the proposed location is wrong as well. As a resident of Alpine, I never travel that area of Alpine blvd. I usually go into town using Arnold Way, since I live off of Tavern.
It should be located near the center of town where Alpine Blvd. and Arnold Way meet, where all residents passing through town would be able to enjoy it.
And lastly, I would agree with many of the concerns of the other residents. Some of the electronic messages in the video were okay, basically saying… “Welcome to Alpine”, but when we start having to look at big business advertisements being stuffed down our throats, then this does not represent the feeling of the old-time Alpine community.
People come to rural Alpine to live, in order to get away from all the noise of the city, they are looking for peace and the feel of the surrounding nature.
As far as the electronic sign being used for emergency purposes or the occasional important information notifications I would have no problem with that. As long as it was not being used as a billboard ad station, but instead, when not displaying emergency or important info. the electronic message center could display a serene picture representing the peacefulness of the Alpine area, or be turned off altogether to keep electric costs at a minimum.
By using the sign in this manner, we don’t need to have someone managing ads, ad times, collection of fees, etc. This would create a great deal of work and it opens up a whole new can of worms. Let’s keep things simple. If we are going to have an arch,
1) Make it a beautiful piece of art – not some industrial eyesore
2) Don’t create something that needs ongoing and constant supervision
3) Don’t use it as an advertising billboard
4) Don’t add the expense of an electronic message center and expect it to be funded by advertising dollars or look to it for future revenue. This does not serve the people of Alpine, it ends up serving the wrong crowd.
Alpine doesn’t need an electronic sign! It should
Be a rustic sign! Alpine is suppose to be like a mountain town but your trying to turn it
Into a big city which is not needed!
All of the other communities in the YouTube presentation were lost in the San Diego Metropolitan Area. Alpine is not lost. It is not someplace where a person needs a sign to locate where he or she is. Let’s NOT make Alpine look anything like Hillcrest, Kensington, El Cajon, Lemon Grove, etc.
Please take you idea down the hill.
Sorry spend your money on some thing better then a sign.
How about this idea spend the your money the fine folks of Aline kids, senors or the park?
Your sign will need up keep after you are all gone who is going to do that?
Not us the tax payers.
Horrible idea, use the money for a nice park or maybe clean up our community center. We live in the country to get away from stuff like this. Autumn
I watched the video in its entirety. I voted it thumbs down on Youtube. Horrible Idea. We don’t want a coca cola logo over Alpine. This is the most un-Alpine idea I have ever seen. We don’t need it.
The ONLY gateway sign that is acceptable is a wooden rustic static sign. This is semi-rural Alpine, not a football stadium.
Better yet, just make replicas of the old wooden signs.
All the cities mentioned that have gateway welcome signs are precisely what Alpine is NOT supposed to become. People come to Alpine to get away from the city. Now the city nonsense is following, this type of nonsense will drive people from Alpine into places like Campo.
WE DO NOT WANT AN ELECTRONIC SIGN!!!!
The following is my email to Anthony with my opinion.
I watched your youtube presentation and you did a fine job explaining the “banner”. Unfortunately I see it as a neon billboard more like what you might find in Las Vegas, or indeed, just like the one you see from the freeway for Viejas.
When your video started and you showed the arch with ALPINE in the center, I thought to myself, “Hey that wouldn’t be as bad as I thought”. Then when I saw the representation of the billboard my stomach literally sank. Unfortunately, like the powerlink, there is probably no way to stop this train. I just wanted you to know that there are those who do not think this is a good idea.
I have friends in the Kiwanis and I think you all do wonderful things!! I just don’t think this is a positive representation of Alpine. Sorry.
I vote for a static rustic looking sign. We are bombarded by ads, visual aids and signage already. I like the rustic wagon wheel theme for our town.
I’m sick of digital signs that are a distraction while driving, case in point the sign above hwy 8 at San Diego State University.
Keep it simple.
