OPPOSITION TO APPLICATION FOR 7-11 STORE LIQUOR LICENSE – Meeting TONIGHT – July 17th at 6:30pm

OPPOSITION TO APPLICATION FOR 7-11 STORE LIQUOR LICENSE

There will be a preliminary meeting on Tuesday, July 17th prior to the Alpine Planning Group’s meeting on the 26th to discuss the  application for a liquor license for the proposed 7-11 on the corner of Alpine Blvd. and W. Victoria Drive.  We are trying to stop the approval of this license based on many factors, including the fact that we have more than enough outlets for selling or supplying alcoholic beverages to the community.  Other factors in discussion will be the added proximity to schools, churches, etc.

There will be a PowerPoint presentation by William Perno, a community organizer from the Institute for Public Strategies who will discuss the regulations regarding liquor licenses and how the community can stop liquor licenses from being approved.  This project is funded by San County Health & Human Services and Alcohol & Drugs Departments.

The meeting is Tuesday, July 17th at 6:30 p.m. at the Alpine Woman’s Club, located at 2156 Alpine Blvd.

Please pass this along to anyone you feel is interested in sharing their thoughts on this subject.  For additional information, please contact Carol Morrison at (619) 445-2544 or email her at edmor@cox.net

OPPOSITION TO APPLICATION FOR 7-11 STORE LIQUOR LICENSE – Meeting TONIGHT – July 17th at 6:30pm

  • Here is an interesting article about a 7-11 in la Mesa that was just forwarded to me by an Alpine Resident

    http://lamesa.patch.com/blog_posts/7-eleven-not-heaven-for-this-la-mesa-neighborhood

  • Scott

Howard, you are again blind to the point. I’m not opposed to anything you are in favor of, we are on the same side. What does get me are people like yourself and Jason, that never participate in the process; who don’t show up at the meetings or communicate in any way, shape or form your opinion at the front end of the process. There is a huge pool of johnny come lately people who get upset after the fact, when it is too late to do anything about a particular situation. If the 15 people who you elected (or were appointed because there is so much apathy that they ran un-opposed) don’t know what your thoughts or opinion is ahead of time, what gives you the right to bitch and moan about a bad decision after the fact.

The bottom line is this, for the most part, the ACPG is just window dressing for the county. The county issues, approves and/or denies the permits, period. The ACPG has no approval/denial power or jurisdiction whatsoever. At best, if, and it’s a big IF, enough people in the community get to the ACPG far enough in advance of an issue, and the ACPG can present the community opposition early on to the county, then the ACPG has some valid power to shape the county’s decision or action on matters that effect the community.

But again, what is required is a PROactive stance, meaning you need to be ahead of the county and its decisions; not a reactive stance where your just standing up and down screaming they screwed us over again.

I encourage all of Lou’s constituency (around 150) and the remaining 15,000 or so residents to participate in the process and run in the election for one of the available ACPG board seats. If you are that passionate after the fact, imagine the good and positive effect you will have if you were channeling all that energy before the poop hit the fan.

  • Scott

    Jason,
I don’t think you even know what the word means, I’m so far from narcissistic but then you could apply that to Lou. Where have you and your opinions been for the past 4 years? Certainly not visible or vocal at any of the ACPG meetings, you are a perfect example of the problem, not the solution. Just another reactive Johnny come lately who hasn’t got a clue but likes to stand around after the fact and gripe. Crowd mentality. I’ll bet you would like to get an anonymous kick or two in. How about you getting your 2 cent involvement ramped up to be proactive and serve on the ACPG instead of bitching about it? Then you can try to get in front of all the stuff that happens at the county level before anyone in Alpine hears about it.

  • Howard

    Mr. Tuchman
    You are a troubled man.
You need to stop and reassess your thoughts.
Please stop the flaming of folks who have a different out look for the future of Alpine.
    May God Bless You.
    Thank You

  • Jason

Scott, I am thankful your seat has become vacant. We are all praying that you get over your bad attitude and borderline narcissistic tendencies. Alpine Planning Group may have gotten a little better with this vacancy.

  • Scott Tuchman

    No Chris,
I do that to 40 something blondes as well. Just because I am no longer on the board doesn’t preclude me from participating as a member of the community. Or did you and Lou somehow rewrite the rules and didn’t bother to share them with the rest of us that states that the community is not allowed to participate in the ACPG meetings.

  • Chris

Scott, why do you care? You aren’t even on the ACPG anymore! I’m assuming you will be at tonight’s meeting since you are so passionate about the issues at hand? In fact aren’t they trying to fill YOUR VACANT SEAT tonight since you resigned? Plus I’m sure there will be plenty of other 75yr old men you can verbally abuse there, unless you only do that while hiding behind your keyboard?

  • Stephanie Brown

Like to see the date/time/location for the next meeting (regarding the proposed 7-11) posted on the “front” page of this website. More people should know and have the opportunity to fight having an ugly 7-11 in Alpine. If it goes through, then I plan on boycotting it and making sure to vote against every member who supported it. Can’t we come up with something better??? Not sure what race has to do with any of this – or why we can’t post responses without attacking each other.
Is anyone out there that supports a 7-11 in the center of Alpine?

  • Scott Tuchman

    Howard,
Your last comment is indicative of why things are the way they are, you enjoy standing on the sidelines, completely apathetic to the needs of the community, shouting obscenities at the 15 people who give up hours of their life every month, trying to make Alpine a better community. I’m sure you have never bothered to even show up for a community or town hall meeting. When in your 30 years have you ever committed yourself to this community? Don’t bother to respond, you’ll just embarrass yourself further.

  • Howard

Folks don’t go up against the ACPG.
    You will get flamed!
Talk about a Good Old Boys Net Work.
This is my last posting on this subject.
    Scott have a nice day.

  • Scott Tuchman

    Howard,
It seems you really are out of touch. The ACPG had nothing to do with SDGE and it was already a done deal approved by the County and the State before anyone in Alpine or the ACPG even knew about it. If you want to complain, then complain to Diane Jacob for keeping her eye off the ball with regard to the CPUC.

I think you just want something to complain about and someone to blame it on. Maybe if you had this much passion 10 years ago, the SDGE might not have steamrolled their way into town.

  • Howard

    Scott;
What do we need the ACPG for?
I have never know or seen the ACPG stand up for Alpine.
Look at what we have SDG&E ran over the top of us,we lost business and Alpine Blvd. is a mess and will be for another year.
    Now we get a 7-11?
As for Richard he can do what ever he likes.
Richard is the one who got his dander up over the remarks about Labor Union 91901 down the street moving up to the center of Alpine.
I called him on it, as it was out of line.
Maybe that is some thing the ACPG could work on get Labor Union 91901 to move out of town.
You can start by calling the Border Patrol or send a letter to them.
    Thank You

  • Scott Tuchman

Well Howard, it’s obvious that you really do not know who or what is really going on with the ACPG. Lou is a current board member and I left the ACPG in February.

If you had a better understanding of how the ACPG and the County works, then you wouldn’t make comments like Garmo has the ACPG in his pocket; maybe the County and the Liquor Board, but certainly not the ACPG. The ACPG has no power or approval authority whatsoever with regard to the Garmo project or any other project that happens. It all gets the original stamp of approval from the County. The fact that Richard Saldano’s company was hired by Garmo has nothing to do with the ACPG. Would you accuse Richard if he was not on the ACPG board? What if you were a general contractor who also happened to serve on the ACPG, would it be fair to accuse you of wrongdoing just because you are a local businessman and you are good at what you do? Richard should be denied a living because he serves on the ACPG?

So the lesson learned here is that if you are a local businessman, don’t serve your community on the ACPG lest you be accused of all kinds of nefarious bad deeds that game the system for personal gain.

I sure hope this doesn’t lessen the pool of community members that will put their name on the ballot to run for a seat on the ACPG board.

I can imagine, Alpine in the 80′s was probably very nice and I agree that the community has gotten dumped on by bad County and State decisions over the past few years, but you can’t blame that on the current ACPG.

  • Howard

    Scott:
First off, I don’t know who you are and I don’t know who Lou Russo is ether.
I’m just an old guy who has lived in Alpine for the past 31 years.
I do know this…. don’t go up against the APG.
If you do… this is what you get.
    Scott thank you very much.
I have watched our town change from a nice small place to live to what we have now and will get more of in the future.
We got run over by SDG&E and now we are getting run over again.
Sorry at age 75 I’m done!!
You folks can do what ever you like.
    Thank You

  • Scott Tuchman

Again Lou, you fail miserably in the communications and typing categories.

First off – what does information from 6 years ago have anything to do with 2012? Especially from a website source that hasn’t been updated in over a year?

Only Jim Easterling and George Barnett are relevant here, as they are the only ones left on the ACPG board that have consistently stayed elected since 2006. While you were elected in 2006, you resigned from the ACPG and left the state and moved to Florida for a significant period of time, or did your alzheimers cause you to forget that pertinent bit of information. You were NOT elected to the ACPG for this current term, you are currently serving on the board once again by appointed default; there were not enough residents of Alpine that ran in the election (in fact there were none, you were unopposed) and the seat was uncontested.

Should there be anyone in the community of Alpine, other than the existing ACPG board members, that wish to run in the election to serve on the ACPG board, now is the time to contact the Registrars office and get your name on the ballot.

    The eight seats available in the upcoming election are: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 & 15

Faulkner, Robie (seat 1), Martinez, Jenni (seat 3), Lyon, Travis (seat 5), Fox, Greg (seat 7), Garay, Roger (seat 9), Milligan, Michael (seat 11), Kill, Cory (seat 13) and Thomas, Kippy (seat 15)

Members are elected and serve a term of four years.

As I stated previously, if you don’t like what’s going on with the ACPG, stop standing on the sidelines and griping, register no to be put onto the ballot, get elected to the ACPG and see if you can do any better than those before you.

Now that Lou Russo, an ACPG member (who was never elected either, by the way) has been caught once again, this time regarding his responsibilities as the Communications chair, he has moved on to ignore that position.

That issue aside, I was at the meeting when Garmo presented the plans for the buildings on both corners of the intersection (remember the clock tower?) and as I recall, the closest any discussion came to a convenience store was a possible deli/small store in the building that was proposed to go up east of Chic Boutique, that could have been a 7-11 type store. The replacement building on the tear down site was business offices downstairs and apartments upstairs. At least that’s what Brian and his guy presented at that meeting.

Howard, you must be one of Lou’s “constituents”, your comment is laughable. The ACPG is in no ones pocket. You forget or you just don’t know, the County is who approved Garmo’s tear down and rebuilding of the site. The ACPG is just a bystander with no approval power whatsoever. Should the ACPG take a public stand against the project, whatever it turns out to be, the County can, and more than likely will, just ignore the opinion of the ACPG. The ACPG wields NO power whatsoever to approve or deny permits and projects, it is strictly an advisory to the County and most of what comes before the ACPG has already been approved by the County before the ACPG is even made aware of the project. There is no “rubber stamp” authority with the ACPG. Racism from Saldano? Seriously? Isn’t that like the pot calling the kettle brown?

But hey, there are potentially 7 seats coming up for election on the ACPG board. I encourage you to throw your name into the ring. You don’t like the way the ACPG represents the community, then I say to you and the others that bitch and moan from the sidelines to get off your bottom and do something about it, make yourself available and run for one of the 7 seats and help your community. In case you didn’t know, out of the current 15 ACPG board members, there are probably only half that have actually been elected; the rest were appointments because there are never enough people in the community that stand up and enter the race, thus no one is really elected by the community voters at large. So instead of armchair griping after the fact without having direct knowledge of what really goes on at the meetings, put yourself out there and run for one of the board seats, force a REAL election and get your butt on the board to help do what’s right for the community. OR, you can lay out in your Barca Lounger, and be part of the sheep squad.

  • Howard

    Right
So when does Mr.Garmo listen to the folks in Alpine?
He told us NO 7-11 and how nice the new building would look.
The safe he was going to use from the old building is gone, the bricks are laying in pile and the timbers are in Mexico.
It would have been nice if he had brought some drawings to the meeting last night.
Yes he did bring his attorney and his guy from the APG that likes to throw the Race Card.
What a piece of work that guy is!
Just for that remark I will vote that guy off the APG.
Mr. Garmo has the APG in his back pocket and you think he gives a “Fat One ” about us here in Alpine.
    Not a chance.
    Its about the money.
Folks Mr.Garmo could give a “Fat One” About Alpine.
    Thank You

  • Tom

Also, let’s encourage as many folks as possible to attend the ACPG meeting at 6pm on July 26, at the Alpine Community Center. The 7/11 off site alcohol sales issue will be a topic of conversation and vote on that day. If you can’t attend, go to the alpinecpg.org website to register your opinion.

  • Hi Tom, just reply to your own comment then click the box that allows you to receive notifications. that should work :-)

  • Tom

Let’s try to do something positive – how about replying with suggestions of your favorite sidewalk cafe’, coffee shop, or retail outlet that would be a better fit for Alpine. If we get some good names & ideas we can pass them along to Mr. Garmo and ask him to consider these options. Seems like good business to listen to the citizens of Alpine to see what kind of shop would be happily accepted by the town.

We like the Champagne French Bakery Cafe. Check out their website at: http://www.champagnebakery.com

  • Howard

Lets see the APG is in the pocket of the property owner and one of the members is also his designer for his building and his side-kick.
    NICE!
The same APG board member also likes to pull the “Race Card”.
What happened to looking out for us here in Alpine?
Its all about the developers, outside interests and not the people.
Why do we need the APG all they do is rubber stamp ever out side interest that comes along and then blame it on the county.

  • Lou Russo

Well Alpine, once again, you see the majority of the ACPG at work. Richard Saldano, an ACPG member (who was never elected, by the way) is chairman of two subcommittees, the Private Actions Subcommittee and the Circulation Subcommittee. Private Actions takes care of items like this. The ACPG was NEVER told this would be a 7-11. However, last night Richard stood up at the meeting and said it was going to be a 7-11 all along. By the way, guess who the contractor is for this project? If you guessed Richard Saldano, you win the cupie doll and cigar! (He is also the contractor for the McDonalds. Membership on the ACPG has been very good for Richard.) As an aside, you will note that Alpine Blvd is NOT done due to the need for a hydrogoly study and placement of drains. Guess who was supposed to be keeping an eye on roads in Alpine? Well, Richard Saldano, chairman of the Circulation subcommittee. He must have been too busy with McDonalds and 7-11. Alpine, November is coming. There are 8 incumbents whose seats are up for election. Happy with the way things are going, from Barnett getting over $219,000 while acting as the Chairman of the Sunrise Powerlink subcommittee, to the current weaving lines on Alpine Blvd? If so, vote them back in. If not….

  • And yes, the ACPG approved the retail center plan, but not the 7-11. It was never mentioned. The only thing we can all do is keep showing up and participating! It is CLEAR Alpine doesn’t want 7-11!

  • Yes u are right. It is my understanding that Brian Garmo is transferring the liquor license from the old ranch market that he sold recently to the new proposed 7-11 location.

  • Larry Evans via Facebook

Well, that was fun. I believe there were two big take aways from this. First, APG and such approved the design of the building, but are not at all involved in who the property owner can lease to. The only reason they are currently involved is due to the liquor license. If it weren’t for that, 7-11, or anyone else, could just move right on in without any community discussion. The other big take away was that 7-11 evidently ALREADY HAS a liquor license which was purchased from another retailer that no longer carries liquor. Please correct me if I don’t quite have the facts straight or if you felt there were some other major issues.

  • Steve Hunyar

Uh – what happened to that being office space with a veneer that would match the old decor? If it’s a 7-11 – won’t that be open 7/24? Won’t we be hurting the other two small family-owned liquor stores in Alpine by allowing this to move forward?
