New Alpine Library Proposal:
There have been many questions about the location of the new Alpine Library. Nearly 3 years ago, the County of San Diego bought the land for the new Library from the Alpine Community Center – a private entity. The new building will be located just west of the present Community Center. Its south facing side will extend about 15 feet onto the present parking lot.
New parking will be built under the building’s north, west side accessed by the present road on the west side of the park. The east side of the structure will add patio to the already existing Wall of Honor patio. The north side of the building will extend over a small area of the grass, but the children’s play areas in the park will not be impacted in any way by the new building. The library will have two upper level shaded deck areas where people can read in a comfortable setting overlooking the park.
Our current library, and especially the children’s area, is much too small to accommodate the programs that people want available. The new library will have designated areas for children, tweens, and teens to encourage young people to read, use computers and participate in the special programs for their age groups.. Our present computer area frequently has a waiting time. The new, larger area will have many more computers so folks can check their email, work on projects, apply for jobs, or just surf the Web. The Alpine Library Friends Association (ALFA) Bookstore will be located at the new Library also. This will enable us to provide more funding for all the programs ALFA supports, now essential since County Library funding continues to be cut.
There is a sign posted at the Community Center site , showing the building plan. Plot plans and conceptual drawings can also be seen at the ALFA Bookstore at 2554 Alpine Blvd.
