New Alpine Library Proposal:
There have been many questions about the location of the new Alpine Library. Nearly 3 years ago, the County of San Diego bought the land for the new Library from the Alpine Community Center – a private entity. The new building will be located just west of the present Community Center. Its south facing side will extend about 15 feet onto the present parking lot.
New parking will be built under the building’s north, west side accessed by the present road on the west side of the park. The east side of the structure will add patio to the already existing Wall of Honor patio. The north side of the building will extend over a small area of the grass, but the children’s play areas in the park will not be impacted in any way by the new building. The library will have two upper level shaded deck areas where people can read in a comfortable setting overlooking the park.
Our current library, and especially the children’s area, is much too small to accommodate the programs that people want available. The new library will have designated areas for children, tweens, and teens to encourage young people to read, use computers and participate in the special programs for their age groups.. Our present computer area frequently has a waiting time. The new, larger area will have many more computers so folks can check their email, work on projects, apply for jobs, or just surf the Web. The Alpine Library Friends Association (ALFA) Bookstore will be located at the new Library also. This will enable us to provide more funding for all the programs ALFA supports, now essential since County Library funding continues to be cut.
There is a sign posted at the Community Center site , showing the building plan. Plot plans and conceptual drawings can also be seen at the ALFA Bookstore at 2554 Alpine Blvd.

Hi Jillian – Your comment from Facebook showed up on the ACN website because it is linked to the same POST (Story) on the website. It is a new feature that allows our Facebook page and Website to be interactive with each other. – Angie
To Deborah Verfaillie yes I do realize that
. Very weird that my comment showed up on here since my post was originally asked to the link from the Alpine Community Network FB page. Which is why I asked about the playground in hopes that somebody that runs that page might know more info about it as they were posting a link with something to do with that area.
To Dean Patterson. Thanks Dean for your comment. Glad you too want a new Library. Of course, a bigger library will be able to carry more books in their stacks – which may be what you are most interested in? Either you are very lucky or very smart to plan your visits to our present Library when it is not very busy. This morning, I was there with 50 other people. All the computers were occupied, people were sitting on the floor, the tables were occupied by people on their personal computers using the WIFI, the children’s story hour was in progress and there was no parking – I went way up the block to park. Mid- afternoons are often a little quieter; but every day looks pretty much like what I just described. Best Wishes, Deborah
to Jillian Dailey. Thanks for your interest in the new Library. Unfortunately ALFA , the Library Friends group has nothing to do with the rest of the Community Center and play areas. We do think that when the new Library is in operation the whole area will benefit with great new vitality.
The park belongs to the Community Center and is maintained by them. They do not receive funding from the state or Feds so membership and fundraising are the sources of revenue.

Great! When are groundbreaking and completion scheduled?
I hope some attention is given to the upkeep of the playground that is already present. We just took our kids for the first time this summer a couple of weeks ago and it’s looking very sad and run down compared to last.
I love the idea of a new library, but the reasons listed here are poor. More space? More computers? More programs? I go to the library at least twice a week and never experience the problems or crowded areas stated here. Yes, a new library, but let’s call it like it is.
