Alpine Library Calendar of Free Events – May 2019

Library events LogoHello and welcome to May! We have some exciting events at the library this month—we hope you’ll come.

The History of San Diego’s Railroads – Thursday, May 16 at 6 pm: The Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association will present a talk on the fascinating history of railroading in San Diego. The presentation will feature photos and stories about the 1919 completion of the San Diego & Arizona Railway, which was financed by entrepreneur John D. Spreckels at a cost of $18 million, or roughly $123,000 per mile. The SD&A rail line was called the “Impossible Railroad” by engineers of its day due to the immense logistical challenges, which included extreme terrain requiring 2.5 miles of bridges and trestles and 21 tunnels, including 11 miles through the treacherous Carrizo Gorge, an area where cliffs dropped more than 1,000 feet to the bottom! https://www.facebook.com/events/2278384568918053/

Library Birthday Party! – Tuesday, May 21 at 3:30 and 6 pm: Celebrate the third anniversary of our new library building! At 3:30 we’ll have a party for kids with party games, refreshments, and balloon animals. Then at 6:00 the Alpine Chorale will perform for all ages, and cake will be served! https://www.facebook.com/events/2408160079416418/

Jazz at the Library: The Bassett Brothers – Thursday, May 23 at 6 pm: The Bassett Brothers are an identical twin guitar duo whose performances showcase a wide range of music from medieval to Metallica. Sean and Ian have played as a duo since the age of fourteen. Their diverse repertoire includes music from the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical eras and spans to more contemporary genres like rock, blues, and heavy metal. Through a mix and match of varied styles, the brothers provide unique interpretations of concert hall classics.
