The Alpine Library is Closed Until Further Notice Due to Coronavirus

April 1, 2020 – Happy April, everyone!

We know you all must be wondering what’s up at the library—how long will we be closed, where are the staff, what should you do with your books?  So, here’s a quick overview of what’s been going on.

We are closed until further notice, in accordance with the guidelines from County Public Health and the State of California. However, library staff are able to work from home on a variety of projects and professional development! We are keeping things running in the background so that we can be ready to reopen as soon as we are able to. You will find lots of new resources on our website and in our e-library, like classes in business, creative, education and tech skills from Lynda.com and school resources for kids and teens. Also, the County’s Live Well @Home site is full of tips and strategies for keeping healthy in both mind and body while staying at home.

All due dates on library materials have been extended until after we reopen, and we will not be charging any late fees. Please do not try to return any items now—we don’t have anyone to check them in or reshelve them since the library elves are also working from home!

We are also still providing reference service online through our Ask A Librarian page. If you need help researching a topic, or just need a recommendation for a good book to read, get in touch any time.

Of course, you probably have other questions so please feel free to reply to this email and we’ll try to help in any way we can.

For our kids and parents, here is a message from Ms. Heather, our youth librarian:

“Hello to my Alpine families – how are you? I miss seeing you at storytime and STEAM! It may be spring break on the school calendar, but while we’re at home, the Alpine Library offers great opportunities to exercise the skills your children have learned during this school year. Preschoolers through first graders will enjoy animated storytime books on BookFlix, a resource available through the library’s home page, SDCL.org (click on “eLibrary”). Kids can read the text along with the narrator, or simply watch the story unfold. Each picture book is paired with easy-reading nonfiction on a related subject, so children can learn about the world around them.

Kids and teens reading independently can borrow chapter books and teen fiction through Libby and OverDrive, the library’s ebook catalog. There are bestsellers from Jeff Kinney, J.K. Rowling, Raina Telgemeier, and more, as well as picture books that older siblings can read to younger ones. If you’re homeschooling (and who isn’t?), you’ll find solid non-fiction titles and literary classics in the Kids’ Schoolhouse and High School @Home ebook collections. For the easiest reading experience, download the free Libby app to your tablet or smartphone. And stay tuned for more updates from your local library!”

And finally, if you’re just missing the library (we miss you too!), here are some ways you can still feel connected to the library world:

Organizing the Books in Your Home, Part 1: How to Shelve Like a Librarian: Maybe this is finally your chance to get all your bookshelves in Dewey Decimal order!

Virtually Visit World-Class Libraries: Eight of the world’s most beautiful—as well as a few of the most out-there—libraries are a click away for now and a bucket list destination for the future.

The Magic of Libraries: Where Fantasy Meets Reality: Consider the many types of fictional libraries you encounter in literature!

How to Help Librarians and Archivists From Your Living Room: If you’re cooped-up and curious, use your free time to decipher handwriting, tag images, and more.

With all our best wishes for your health and happiness,

The Alpine Library Staff
