Alpine Union School District Superintendent’s Spotlight Newsletter – November 2015

AUSD logo

November 2015 – Greeting from 1323 Administration Way!

We have experienced a great start to the school year. The enrollment in the district is strong and growing. So many incredible things are happening at the school sites. This year AUSD staff is emphasizing attendance and engagement. Research shows that absences add up. This is true whether the student is in kindergarten or 8th grade as well as for excused and unexcused absences. We do realize that there will be a time when students are sick and cannot attend school. Research shows that nationwide, as many as 7.5 million students miss 10 percent of the school year. That is 135 million school days missed and missed opportunities to be engaged in learning.

Spotlight on: Creekside Early Learning Center
Creekside Early Learning Center focuses on early childhood development. It is unique in the sense that the focus is strictly designed for four to six year olds. CELC currently offers a Special Day Preschool, Dual Language Fee based preschool, an Early Admissions Kindergarten, Transitional Kindergarten (including Spanish Immersion), general education Kindergarten and Dual Language Kindergarten. CELC focus on the individual needs of each child with the Pathways Plus Program. The staff of experienced teachers has created a program unique to Creekside that makes it possible for the students to receive small group instruction in reading. During this eighty-minute block of time students receive instruction in creating words, learning to read, building fluency, phonemic awareness, spatial math reasoning and music. Students also work on following directions and improving their gross motor skills in our SPARKS program. Creekside Early Learning Center is creating the foundation for life learners in the ever-changing 21st century.

Shadow Hills Elementary
The Shadow Hills School Pathways Explorations and Pathways Discovery program will include a science program that is challenging, rewarding, interesting and instructionally rich, but also incorporate robotics and coding. The Science program component includes non-fiction and literature connections that provide tools for college and career readiness. It helps educators incorporate engaging career-focused approaches into their existing instruction. It focuses on supporting and sustaining students’ natural interests in science and technology. Science and technology related education can be inspiring to students. Let’s teach them that the world around them is not just for their observation and consumption. It is for them to create and build upon. It will be their innovations that improve our lives and power a brighter future. Both Creekside Early Learning Center and Shadow Hills School offer a Dual Language program. Dual language immersion offers a rich bilingual experience for young learners when their minds are developmentally best able to acquire a second language. Instruction is divided between two high quality, creative classrooms: one English, and one Spanish. Students will become global citizens providing them with a completive edge in the 21st century. The program is offered in Transitional Kindergarten through third grade. We will be adding additional grades each year until we reach eighth grade.

Mountain View Learning Academy
Mountain View Learning Academy (MVLA) is AUSDs “uncharter” charter school offering what many charter schools offer in a public school setting. MVLA is a hybrid learning environment that is based on a combination of home schooling and independent study model. The teachers work closely with the students and their families individualizing the learning needs of each child. The students are offered on-site classes three days a week that focus on reading, math, hands on science, writing, visual and performing arts and project based learning with the use of real life problems. Students are welcomed back two days a week for additional tutoring. This is a fully accredited program that benefits from the highly experienced credential teaching staff. The teachers and students have full use of a computer lab, keyboard lab, art room, gymnasium, library, and playground. We offer Transitional Kindergarten through eighth grade. As a reminder Early Admission Kindergarten enrollment has started. We have limited space so please enroll today.

Next up the spotlight will be on Alpine Elementary School.

Sincerely, Bruce Cochrane Superintendent – Alpine Union School District
