CRIME ALERT – Equipment Theft in Peutz Valley 6-17-13

CrimeAlert

6-17-13

I was leaving my home and we have a lower lot with some equipment and parts on it and there was a primer color black truck in our lower lot pulling out as I came down my driveway. They made a sharp right turn with a metal equipment stand of ours falling out of the back of their truck as they went up Peutz valley.  I stopped in the road with the help of a passerby and they picked up the heavy part and put it on my driveway and at that time the black truck came back down the road heading toward Alpine blvd.  and almost hit my car to get around me.

I followed and called 911, as they proceeded down Peutz Valley and made a right on Alpine blvd. then left on Peutz valley rd (dirt section) between Alpine blvd. and Arnold were I told 911 I lost sight of them as I was concerned about following them  back in there.

Neighbors keep a look out!

CRIME ALERT! Burglary on Starkey Way – May 2013

CrimeAlert

6-12-13

I feel this is important to share because I have now talked to two other people who had the same exact burglary and the Sheriff’s office had not made the connection.  There were no leads to follow up on–no fingerprints, but the community needs to know that Alpine is a target region for a burglar who can open bolted doors and safes professionally without any signs of breaking and entering.

“He” leaves everything in original order/placement so owners are unsuspecting.  I have been networking with my immediate neighbors about this, one of which shared that they had observed a silver Toyota around May 11 (middle of our trip) taking photos of our driveways in our block with a cell phone, but didn’t get a license plate #.

I just want to give folks a “heads up” because I think these residential burglaries will continue in Alpine and may, in fact, be occurring in other communities of SD county.  We have now installed a security system which we hope will prevent further targeting of our home.  Our insurance company informed us that, according to their statistics, 80% of their burglarized clients experience another break- in within a year’s time.  It is a scary reality, not to mention a loss of invaluable, irreplaceable personal items (inherited family jewelry).

I live on Starkey Way and was gone from April 30 to May 22 during which time the burglary occurred.

SOCIAL HOSTING – Adult party hosts be warned – sheriff’s deputies plan to step up enforcement

Social Hosting

Cited party hosts often charged, panel finds

By Teri Figueroa, June 2, 2013 noon

Adult party hosts be warned. With graduations under way and summer approaching, sheriff’s deputies plan to step up enforcement of social host laws in the cities and communities they patrol.

City police departments also are expected to continue citing violators of the local laws that hold adults criminally liable for knowingly hosting gatherings where those under 21 are drinking alcohol.

Penalties vary, but some cases can draw a misdemeanor criminal conviction, fines of more than $1,000 and probation.

The county and all 18 cities in the county have some sort of social host law on the books. The Sheriff’s Department has made a special effort to enforce the laws.

On average, deputies issued five tickets a month in the first half of 2012 — up from less than two tickets a month for each of the previous three years, according to the Alcohol Policy Panel, a volunteer coalition that advises county officials on ways to end binge and underage drinking.

Of the 30 tickets issued, about three-quarters of the cases ended up in court. And most of the defendants ended up with a conviction, the panel’s research found.

“I find that encouraging,” said Beth Sise, chairwoman of the Alcohol Policy Panel.

Sise said stepped up enforcement may help to deter others from putting on parties where alcohol is given to minors.

Some social host cases land in the headlines, like that of a middle school teacher cited for her son’s graduation party at the family’s Valley Center home last June. Deputies said they found dozens of teens drinking.

The teacher resigned from her job two months after the party. She eventually pleaded guilty, was sentenced to three years of probation, fined $1,000 and ordered to do community service.

Other arrests don’t get as much attention. In May, a 19-year-old man was arrested after deputies in San Marcos found about 20 teens drinking in his hotel room. He went to jail that night.

Shutting down the party took seven deputies, two sergeants and hours of paperwork at a cost of nearly $1,900. San Marcos can try to recoup those costs from the host.

With high school and college graduations under way, adult party hosts can expect more teams of deputies on patrol, said sheriff’s Lt. J.T. Faulkner.

The point is to prevent drunken driving, sexual assaults or any harm that can follow when teens and alcohol mix, even if the party is at mom and dad’s house, said Lt. Christina Bavencoff of the San Marcos sheriff’s station.

“People are allowed to have parties. We just want people to think twice before something bad happens,” Bavencoff said.

The Sheriff’s Department issued 84 social host citations between Jan. 1, 2008, and April 30, 2012, according to data compiled by the Center for Community Research, a San Diego nonprofit that provides research and evaluation services.

Nearly half of those — 35 citations — were from Vista.

The research found that police departments throughout the county issued 207 social host citations between Jan. 1, 2007, through April 30, 2012. Of those, 119 were issued by San Diego police.

The Center for Community Research compiled the data for the county’s Health and Human Services Agency. The figures were limited to what the law enforcement agencies were able to provide.

Alpine Sheriff Dept Offers a Good Reminder for Parents of New Drivers

teen driver 1

Just a good reminder for parents of new drivers….

As the school year winds down, teens are looking forward to summer. As they prepare for proms, graduations, vacations and road trips; it’s important to keep safety in mind.

Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in America. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also finds the deadliest days of the year for teenagers are in the summer months of May, June, July and August. During these four months, nearly twice as many teens die on the roads each day compared to the rest of the year. That’s why National Youth Traffic Safety Month is so important.

A teenager might say: “I know everything,” but parents still play a critical role. If you have a teenager who is now starting to drive, we urge you to take a Sheriff’s Start Smart class with your son or daughter. Since June 2010, free Start Smart classes have been regularly offered to new drivers and their parents/guardians so they clearly understand their responsibilities when a teen starts to drive. The class also clarifies the restrictions of a provisional license and social host rules in the county. Participants also hear from people who have lost loved ones in drunk driving crashes.

Parents/guardians, be reminded that if your teenager has a PROVISIONAL LICENSE, he or she cannot carry a passenger unless you or someone else who is 25years of age is in the car.

CRIME ALERT – Man Wanted for Money Order Scams Around SD County 5-9-13

Sheriffs Badge

Money Order Scammer5-9-13 The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and Crime Stoppers want your help in identifying and finding a man wanted in connection with a string of money order scams.

The M.O. is always the same. He walks into an Albertsons store to purchase a money order for $500, but is short $20. He pulls a $20 bill from his pocket and recounts the money in front of the cashier. With a quick hand, he pockets six to eight $20 bills before handing back the money to the cashier. The cashier then completes the transaction and issues a money order for $500 without recounting the money.

The man you see in the surveillance photo has targeted Albertsons stores in unincorporated El Cajon, Santee, Alpine, Lemon Grove, and San Marcos between January and April of this year. He is also wanted in Santa Barbara County for the same crimes.

Community Alert – Craigslist job scam lures people to Mexico

By Debbi Baker, March 21, 2013 8:15 a.m.

CARLSBAD — A college student from La Costa almost became a victim of a Craigslist scam after applying for a job and then being told he had to go to Tijuana to complete the process.

Nate Dirkmaat, 18, who is on a semester break from Brigham Young University Idaho, answered an ad purporting to be from Habitat for Humanity looking for drivers. It promised pay of $21.50 an hour.

He went for an interview at a Mission Valley coffee shop on March 2, meeting with a man who said he was from the charity. The meeting ended with Dirkmaat being told he would need to go to Mexico for a “tour” before he could be hired.

He thought something was amiss and did not comply. He then told his parents about the odd request and they called Habitat for Humanity and discovered the ad — and the job — were bogus.

“They told us about an incident with another boy,” said the teen’s mother, Lisa Dirkmaat.

In that situation, the applicant answered a similar ad and followed instructions to travel to Tijuana, where he was given a tour of a neighborhood where the home-building charity was supposedly going to work. The applicant grew wary and returned to his SUV to find a group of people in the process of stripping it.

He jumped into the SUV and drove home.

Lori Holt Pfeiler, San Diego’s Habitat for Humanity executive director, said the charity was contacted by that victim as well as three or four others asking about the fake ad.

Pfeiler said Habitat only conducts interviews at its office and does no interviews in Tijuana.

“That’s an interesting twist on a scam because it takes people to another country,” said sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Varnau, who investigates financial crimes. He said he had not heard of this particular Craigslist scam but was not surprised by it.

Varnau said that if a U.S. citizen gets ripped off in Mexico, local authorities there would have jurisdiction.

“The only thing we can really do about it is to try and keep others from being victimized by getting Craigslist to take down those ads,” Varnau said.

Lisa Dirkmaat said she reported the scam to police and planned to notify Craigslist.

She said the ad her son responded to has been taken down, but she found another one with the same name and number that said it was from the Salvation Army.

That solicitation is also bogus, said Mjr. Henry Graciani of the Salvation Army. Like Habitat, Graciani said, his charity would never meet someone anywhere other then the group’s office.

“That’s unfortunate,” Graciani said of the scam. “We are all in the business of making the community better and helping people, not hurting people.”

Although Nate Dirkmaat did not cross the border, he did hand over all of his personal information to the fake interviewer, including copies of his Social Security card, birth certificate, driver’s license and vehicle registration. He has never seen or heard from the man again.

“They could totally open a credit card in his name,” said the teen’s mother, who has since called credit reporting companies to flag her son’s information and notify them if anyone tries to use it.

Varnau said anyone who comes across such an ad should call the charity in question and verify the information before acting on it.
