12 Year Old Alpine Girl is in Desperate Search of a Kidney

Local Alpine girl, 12 year old Kassidy Thomas is in desperate search of a Kidney. She’s having both her kidneys removed this coming Thursday (August 3, 2017) Check out her Facebook page here:

Below is a message from Kassidy’s Parents:

In May of 2012, at a routine doctor’s appointment for our 8 year old daughter, our lives were changed forever.  Extra tests were ordered, and shortly thereafter, our sweet daughter, Kassidy, was diagnosed with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, commonly known as FSGS.

This disease scars the kidneys, which leads to permanent kidney damage and eventual complete failure of the kidneys. Kassidy is now in “end stage kidney failure.”  That means her kidneys no longer function.  She receives in-home dialysis for 9 hours every night while she sleeps. She is having surgery in August to have her kidneys removed as they are now causing more damage than good.

This is a huge surgery and causes a multitude of side effects.  Including possible Hemo dialysis which would mean that she would have to have a pic placed in her heart and receive dialysis at Rady Children’s hospital 3 times a week, 5 hours a day for at least 6 weeks.

We desperately need a new kidney for Kassidy.  We are seeking donors that are A or O blood type, with A+ being the best; who are between the ages of 18 and 55, and who are in good health.  It’s a simple blood draw to determine your blood type and possible match. Our insurance pays for the testing and the donor surgery if that becomes possible.  With a new kidney, Kassidy will be off of dialysis, and will once again be able to lead a normal life.

Please contact the Transplant Coordinator at Rady Children’s Hospital for more information: Kyla — (858) 966-4093.

UPDATE 8-14-17 By Angela Brookshire (Alpine Community Network Director) Hi everyone! I know many of you have called Rady’s to see if you can be tested to see if you are a match for Kassidy and are are frustrated because you called as long as 10 days ago and havent heard anything back…. I contacted Kassidy’s Mom about this and this is what she told me …… “This is Dawn, Kassidy’s mom. Please understand that Rady’s has NEVER before see this kind of response to a child in need of a kidney. They are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and kindness for our sweet Kassidy. Kassidy’s doctor is now involved and assures me that things will get moving better in the days to come. There is a lot of red tape they need to get through. So please hold tight and know that I/we are doing the best we can to get phone calls answered. Don’t give up! We (my family) is on this and are trying to get things worked out❤️”

If you are unable to donate a kidney, please explore the option of making a donation to NephCure Kidney International at This is the only organization committed to support, research, and finding a cure for the debilitating kidney diseases of FSGS and Nephrotic Syndrome. If you are able to make a donation, please make it in Kassidy’s name (Kassidy Thomas).  Thank you!

We sincerely thank you all! Much Love, Kassidy, Kippy & Dawn (her mom and dad)

Also – This Sunday (August 6) a bunch of us are also getting together to decorate alpine green and purple (kidney disease awareness color and her favorite color) we’re meeting at 8:30 am in the parking lot behind Alpine Dance School. Hoping to get the whole town decorated with a focus on Tavern since that’s the road she’ll travel home on.

Memorial Fund Set Up for Family of Alpine Resident Kyle Cleavenger

Source: Go Fund me

“Sadly, we have lost another close and dear friend too early.  Kyle Cleavenger, our fun-loving friend  suddenly and tragically died on Saturday afternoon, May 27, 2017 at the river while celebrating another typical Memorial Day weekend.

Kyle and Andrea and their 2 children just finished dinner, and as they departed the restaurant, he unexpectedly was stricken with a fatal heart attack.  Aggressive efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

We all know Kyle was one of the happiest people anyone could ever know.  He was always laughing and joking with everyone. Everyone that came into contact with him instantly enjoyed his presence.  He was always ready to crack a joke or sting someone with his piercing wit.  Kyle was a one-in-a-million kind of person.

Thankfully, Kyle has left us all with fond memories. But tragically, he also left behind his family to grieve and somehow go forward.  He and his loving wife Andrea were “buddies”, always together. Andrea and their 2 children, Brittnee and Shayne, are faced with this terrible loss and must somehow live on. Kyle was a wonderful husband, father, son, brother and friend.  Kyle, Andrea, Brittnee and Shayne were a close foursome, who now must somehow find the strength and wisdom to go on without Kyle.

How can we help?  What can we do in this terrible time in the loss of the “leader-of-the-pack”?

We can all share in taking food, drinks, love and support.  But Kyle’s family will be faced with many hard decisions, both immediate and long term.  It’s almost unbearable to make such decisions while suffering this loss.  There will be immediate financial demands on Andrea, Brittnee and Shayne.  Financial demands have already started.  We can help.

I am asking for your direct financial help in this Go Fund me account set up for Andrea.  I am sure Andrea values the love and support we give her, but let’s add to that love and support through a Go Fund Me campaign to help Kyle’s family.  It will take some pressure off Andrea.  Look at it as buying Kyle dinner, or a drink or a beer.   Please help Kyle’s family with a contribution. Kyle gave us great memories. Let’s honor him with support to Andrea.

As a friend to the Kyle Cleavenger family, thank you for any help.- Vanessa McMillin Butcher

Celebration of life for Kyle Cleavenger – There will be a reception immediately following at the Flinn Springs Inn, 15505 Olde Hwy 80, El Cajon Ca 92021. Food will be served at 1pm. There will be a no host bar and horseshoe tournament. *More info

Rally for Riley – Local Boy Diagnosed With Ewing’s Sarcoma

Rally for Riley

Local boy, Riley Ransdall, has been diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma at 11 years old. Ewing’s is an extremely rare cancer that metastasizes in the bones and soft tissues around bones. Riley must undergo 13 weeks of chemotherapy, surgery to remove the tumor and then radiation. He must brave a total of 52 weeks ( an entire year) of treatment.

Riley is an active and bright boy. Until recently, he played little league in Alpine. He now plays Granite Hills Youth Football and is a Sweetwater Warrior at East County Warriors Youth Lacrosse Club. He currently attends Spring Valley Academy an International Baccalaureate Middle Years School, and is on the honor roll. Riley’s family has been in Alpine and San Diego County for over 40 years. [From Kristin Benson] Until recently, he lived down the street from my family and even though he is older than my children, he was always willing to play with them and include them. Not many 5th graders are willing to play with 6 and 7-year-olds. He is a kind and generous boy. My family is honored and blessed to know Riley and his family.

December 26, 2016 – Update on Christmas Donation Drive for 3 Alpine Families and Kits for the Homeless….. And Just like that …… MAGIC!

kristin-gauss-donations*Read original story here

The Dream Catchers Group would like to thank the community of Alpine and all of the donors for their outpouring of generosity supporting our first Christmas Donation Drive. Together, we were not only able to provide a Christmas for our initial three families. With the abundance of donations and your giving spirit we were able to help 13 families have an amazing Christmas. In addition, we were able to assemble 110 homeless blessings kits and donate them to a shelter downtown.

A huge thank you to Dana’s Boutique for opening their doors as an early drop off location and for their continued promotion of this special cause. We started Dream Catchers to make a difference in the community through giving back. With bountiful support, this endeavor is just the beginning for our group. This community’s kindness and abundance of encouragement taught us to set our goals higher. We learned that nothing is impossible when you have the support of an amazing community.

From our families to yours we thank you all and wish every one of you a magnificent Happy Holidays!

Kristen Gauss

The packaged gifts are ready to go!

December 21, 2016 – Submitted By Angela Brookshire (ACN Director)

The 2016 donation drive for 4 Alpine Families in Need was a HUGE SUCCESS with a grand total of $2,700 donated! Those donations were used to purchase Visa Gift Cards that could be used to buy food, gifts, pay utilities, get a car fixed or anything else that each family needs. They were given to the families along with some cheerful Christmas Decorations and wrapped in a beautiful package! The Families were thankful beyond measure and it surely relieved some stress for them this Christmas! I received messages of extreme gratitude from the families as they informed me that they had paid a past due bill, got a car fixed or were our buying groceries and Christmas Gifts for their families!

I will never forget how wonderful it felt to hand these families their packages! I want to thank the community of ALPINE for their INCREDIBLE GENEROSITY and supporting me in making this happen!!
