Meet the Chef & Author of “Tree of Life” Angie Brenner – May 6, 2017

The Culinary Literacy Club Presents Meet the Chef: Angie Brenner at the Alpine Library on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 3 pm

When Angie Brenner and Joy Stocke met on the balcony of a guesthouse in the small resort town of Kalkan, Turkey, they discovered a shared love of history, literature, cooking and local food traditions. They soon set off on a cultural adventure that spanned more than fifteen years. Returning to their American kitchens, they recreated the flavors of Anatolia as a culinary souvenir and incorporated that sensibility into the food they cook every day for themselves and their families and friends. Inspired by their memoir, Anatolian Days & Nights, their cookbook Tree of Life presents more than 100 accessible recipes, many of which were taught to the authors by home cooks from across Turkey. In this spirit, Tree of Life’s recipes celebrate a mosaic of ingredients in dishes such as: Fresh Melon with Feta Cheese and Fresh Pomegranate Seeds, Carrot Hummus with Toasted Fennel Seeds; and Dilled Yogurt Soup with Chickpeas and Rice.

The Culinary Literacy Club is like a book club for cooks—a chance to improve (or show off) your cooking skills, and explore the library’s cookbook collection. Check out a book on this month’s theme, create a dish at home, and then join us for the monthly group discussion. Bring a sample for everyone to try! This month’s theme is Mediterranean cuisine, and you can find sample recipes from Tree of Life at anatoliankitchentreeoflife.com. Tree of Life may be purchased at any bookstore or online, and there will be copies available for purchase and signing at the event. The Alpine Library is located at 752 Alpine Blvd, Alpine CA. 91901 (619) 445-4221. For more info email albranch1752@gmail.com
