All Alpine Library Events, Programs, and Classes CANCELLED Through the End of March 2020

March 13, 2020 – Dear Alpine Library patrons,

San Diego County Library is closely following developments regarding the spread of the new coronavirus disease, or COVID-19. The County Public Health Office recommends the practice of social distancing—keeping people apart. Under the guidance of the CA Department of Public Health and San Diego County’s Public Health Office, we have decided to cancel all library sponsored and co-sponsored events, programs, and classes through the end of March. All 33 San Diego County Library branches will remain open for essential services during this time. San Diego County Library will continue to provide free access to computers, public wi-fi, and material checkouts.

To support increased demand, we are investing an additional $500,000 into our digital library collection, available 24/7 at www.sdcl.org/elibrary. Library cards offer free access to apps such as Libby for e-books and digital audiobooks, Flipster for e-magazines, as well as a wide range of online learning resources.

We are committed to keeping you safe and informed.

To limit the spread of infection, you should:

  • Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds to help protect you from germs.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, if soap and water are not available. It should contain at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home and keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, then wash your hands. For information and community resources, please call 2-1-1 San Diego or visit www.211sandiego.org or www.coronavirus-sd.com

Library events LogoHappy March! Spring is on its way…and here’s what’s coming up this month at the library:

Vintage Antiques from Alpine’s History: Thursday, March 5 at 6 pm
What do a McGuffey Reader, a butter churn, a monument marker, and a marriage license all have in common? They are all over a century old and can all be seen at Alpine’s John De Witt Museum. Tom Myers, President of the Alpine Historical Society, will bring a variety of objects, each over 100 years old, to the Alpine Library to illustrate the new poster exhibit at the Library. Tom will talk about each item, describe how it was used, and tell its story. The presentation will provide insight on the life and times of early Alpine settlers.

Control Ants the Healthy Way: Saturday, March 14 at 1 pm
Learn how to make your home and garden less attractive to ants, what to do when they invade your house, why spraying chemicals does not provide effective control and much more. Special guest speaker and Environmental Horticulturist Carolyn Kinnon will be on hand to answer your questions.

Create Space (ages 18+)*: Thursday, March 19 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm
o you have a creative project you’d love to work on, but you never seem to have the time or space to do it at home?
Bring your project to the library and spend a few hours with nobody bothering you—get some work done and meet new people! We’ll provide cookies and coffee and nice big tables.

Acoustic in Alpine: Master of Vibes: Thursday, March 26 at 6 pm
Everyone from Lionel Hampton to the Rolling Stones to the Beach Boys has it, but have you ever heard a vibraphone in person? Master vibraphonist Anthony Smith brings the jazz greats to Alpine in a concert that takes you on an entertaining, informative journey through the history of this beautiful-sounding, but sometimes overlooked, instrument!

As always, many thanks to the Alpine Library Friends Association for their continuing support of our library. Visit the ALFA Bookstore and help support our collection and programs. Bookstore hours are Mondays, 10 AM – 4:30 PM, Tuesdays, 10 AM – 7:30 PM, and Wednesdays – Saturdays, 10 AM – 4:30 PM.
