Free Microchipping Offered By San Diego County Animal Services Before 4th of July

Microchip Your Dog For Free Before Fourth Of July!

Last year, nearly 60 dogs ended up at San Diego County Animal Services on the Fourth of July and the days following the holiday.

The loud booms and bright lights of fireworks might be the festive way Americans celebrate the Fourth of July – but not their four-legged friends.

“Dogs can panic and they’ll do anything to escape from the noise,” said County Department of Animal Services Director Daniel DeSousa. “That includes digging under, climbing over or even breaking through gates, screens, fences, windows and doors.”

In an effort to keep pets and their owners connected, county animal shelters are microchipping dogs for free from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting Tuesday, June 27, through Sunday, July 2. Normally, the cost is $10.

There are three county animal shelters:

  • Central Shelter, 5480 Gaines St., San Diego
  • North Shelter, 2481 Palomar Airport Road, Carlsbad
  • South Shelter, 5821 Sweetwater Road, Bonita

If you find a lost pet after the fireworks, call County Animal Services’ 24-hour emergency dispatch number at 619-236-2341 so the animal can be cared for at the shelter. If you lose your pet, check the department’s lost and found page online and Finding Rover, a free facial recognition app that matches dogs’ faces with those that have been lost or found. If your dog is at County Animal Services, you can pick up your pet starting at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5.
