UPDATE! 3-19-12
We got him back home to his family. He had a chip, but there was no information on his chip, so Connie at Dr Hackets office located the manufacturer and we found his family thru the manufacturer. He is 9 years old and his name is “Hunter” but we had called him freckels (I think he was so happy to come to any name). So, that was a happy ending:) – Loni

Dog Found Shot On East County Road In Critical Condition
Wounded Dog Found On Viejas Grade Road in Alpine

- Story Courtesy of 10 News
SAN DIEGO — San Diego County Animal Services officials are searching for the owner of a dog found bleeding on the side of an East County road. The dog, a 40-pound male retriever mix, was found Monday morning with a gunshot wound to the chest or abdomen area on Viejas Grade Road, animal services officials said. As of Tuesday morning, the animal was listed in critical but stable condition and is expected to survive.
A passerby and a Viejas firefighter spotted the dog and stopped to help.”He was just laying there unattended and abandoned,” said Lt. Harold Holmes, who is with the San Diego County Animal Services. “It’s very disturbing to treat an animal so cruelly and to hurt a defenseless animal.”

I live on the west side of Ranchito Lane (just off of Alpine Heights Rd). There are many dogs running loose in the neighborhood - 2 in particular….. a short shaggy black dog and a golden larger dog (sorry, I’m bad with breeds). They play in the street and in the ravine behind the houses where the coyotes live. I’m worried they will get hit by a car or in a fight with the coyotes. Are they strays? I see them more and more and they are having fun running around, but I don’t want them to get hurt. If you know who owns these dogs, please let them know. Thank you.
