The Children’s Nature Retreat in Alpine is CHANGING the NATURE of CHILDHOOD!

Childrens nature retreat logo ONLY

The nature of childhood has changed. There’s not much nature in it. The Children’s Nature Retreat is aiming to change that!

ALPINE, CA – April 12, 2017 – In the last two decades, childhood has gone from playing outside until the street lights came on, to children ages 8-18 spending an average of 53 hours a week indoors virtually hard-wired to technology. (Source)

binocularboy_01_charliearchambault_219x219The profound impacts to the wellness of our children include childhood obesity rates doubling over the last 20 years, our nation becoming the largest consumer of ADHD medications in the world, and markedly increased pediatric prescriptions to anti-depressant medications. (Source)

This shift inside has been attributed to two primary factors, according a 2011 poll conducted by The Nature Conservancy – a lack of access to natural areas and a discomfort with the outdoors. (Source: https://www.nature.org/newsfeatures/kids-in-nature/kids-in-nature-poll.xml)

childrens nature retreat photo 1The Children’s Nature Retreat, located in Alpine, is a 20-acre safe haven to nearly 100 domestic, livestock and equine rescue and adopted animals, including Zebras, African Camels, Alpacas, and Ostriches. The retreat provides an optimal living environment for the animals, and educational and recreational opportunities for visitors of all ages. With the help of donors through the retreat’s affiliate nonprofit, Hands United for Children (http://www.handsunited4children.org), the retreat provides free field trips and transportation to children in underprivileged and distressed situations, including Title I K-8 students across the county, like those at The O’Farrell Charter Schools in Southeast San Diego’s Encanto neighborhood.

To date, the retreat has hosted free field trips for over 550 students with a goal to double that number this year. Since the retreat’s grand opening to the public in February, 2017, they have also hosted free admission for children with Autism and a free field trip for the Kylie Rowan Foundation’s beneficiary families living with childhood cancer.

zebra Childrens nature retreatBree Rowand, who founded the Kylie Rowand Foundation with her husband, Luke, after they lost their two-year-old daughter Kylie to cancer in 2015, said their recent experience at the retreat was a gift, even if just for one day, for the children to not have to worry about things they should never have to worry about. (https://www.facebook.com/TheKylieRowandFoundation/)

“Our families ran around and played. The animals are so therapeutic. These kids are used to being stuck in hospitals, so it was a relaxing day for them to be able to be free from going through painful things and just able to breathe.”

The health benefits to engaging the body, mind and spirit with the outdoors and animals are proven to increase fitness, help protect against disease, reduce ADHD symptoms, and protect emotional development. Environmental education programs also significantly increase student performance on tests, improve critical thinking skills, and promote environmental stewardship. Hosre & Goat childrens nature retreatChildren’s Nature Retreat is pioneering ways to support environmental education through unstructured outdoor exploration, hands-on experiences with the animals, and encouraging a farm to table connection with where our food comes from through fruit tree orchards and grape vine rows. They will soon add an organic herb and vegetable garden, overnight camps, and day camp programs starting this summer.

“We are the only place like this in all of San Diego County. It’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity for children to unplug, learn and discover,” says Agnes Barrelet, Executive Director of Hands United for Children and President of Children’s Nature Retreat.

Hands United for Children also operates a dental clinic serving 1,400 students of The O’Farrell Charter School free of charge, and built and operates a preschool and nursery that educates and feeds 124 children in Burkina Faso, West Africa. Expanding on their efforts in West Africa, this year the organization is in the planning stage to build a Rural Medical Center that includes a maternity, emergency services and malnutrition center.

Hands United for Children is seeking support to continue successfully providing these programs by inviting one and all to their 6th Annual Fundraising Gala with a fun-filled Disco DJ and Dancing night on Friday, May 19, 2017 from 6:30pm to 11:00pm at Viejas Casino and Resort. There will be a cocktail reception, 3-course dinner, and silent and live auctions. 100-percent of proceeds go directly into all of their programs benefitting children. Save 10% on tickets when purchased by May 1st. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit http://www.handsunited4children.org.

Gymtrix Cheerleading & Gymnastics Teams & Classes for ALL AGES in Alpine

Gymtrix Builds Confidence, Skills and Team Camaraderie
Here at Gym Trix, we know how important it is for kids to have regular exercise, to challenge themselves and to feel a part of something. We have been part of the Alpine community for over 20 years and we offer programs for all ages and abilities. Two of our exciting programs focus on being a part of a team and working at your highest level of skill.

Gymnastics Team
gymtrix 5When you think of gymnastics, you don’t typically think of it as a team sport. But here in Alpine at GymTrix gymnastics, we compete a little differently. Our gymnastics team competes in Power Team Gym. Power Team Gym is part of USA Gymnastics under the Group Gymnastics discipline. Our teams compete together on floor, tumbling, vault and mini tramp. Rather than being out on the floor
alone, our team competes a synchronized floor routine together and truly works together as a team. As part of a team, your kids will learn new skills, work together with their teammates and have a great time. We currently have a level 1, 2, 3, 5 and level 7 team. Next season we plan to add a level 4.
gymtrix 4We compete 4 or 5 competitions each season as well as community performances and our current teams will be headed to Nationals in June, having all qualified at their first competition of the season. Besides gymnastics, we do many activities together as a team and our team members will be the first to tell you that we have a lot of fun! We will be having placements for our next season on Wednesday
May 10, 2017 from 6:30-8:30pm for levels 4-7 and Thursday May 11, 2017  from 6:00-8:00pm for levels 1-3. Come check us out and become part of the team!

Cheer Force Prep
gymtrix 1If Cheerleading is your passion, we have the teams for you. In conjunction with Cheer Force, we have three prep teams that compete throughout the season. Currently we have teams available for ages 4 and up. Our cheer teams typically compete 4 competitions as well as perform at local community events. Our Cheer Force prep teams learn tumbling, dance, stunts and how to work together as a team. All the levels help each other out and the older teams serve as role models for the younger ones. Our cheer coaches foster a positive environment where the athletes learn, improve and most importantly, have fun! Our cheer teams spend time together outside of competition bonding gymtrix 2together as a team and having a great time. Our junior team became Grand Champions this season and we are so proud of all our kids and our program. The time is just ahead where you can become a part of one of our amazing teams. On May 3rd, 4th and 5th we will be doing prep evaluations. Ages 4-8 will be from 4-5pm and ages 9& up will be from 5-6pm. See what fun you can have as part of one of our cheer teams!
