Host a Short-Term Foreign Exchange Student from Belgium This Summer 2018!

This summer Alpine/ Lakeside/El Cajon will be the home for 26 foreign exchange students (ages 16-19) from Belgium. The students will be herefor 3 weeks and will be with a group that organizes their days and takes them to all the amusements, such as Sea World, Disneyland, etc. They also travel for 5 days to the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas.

We are looking for families to host the students and give them an American experience while they are here. Evenings and weekends they can participate in family activities such as going to the desert, church, sporting events, beach, BBQs, or whatever else a typical American family does! Families with teens are especially urged to participate. Hosts will be compensated for a student’s room and board…but the cultural exchange is priceless!

Student Groups are scheduled for:
July 5 – July 28, 2018 (gone 7/16-20)
August 2 – August 25, 2018 (gone 8/13-17)

FAQ:
What do I need to provide for my student?
Students need their own bed, (but not their own room or bath), they will need breakfast available and a packed lunch for some of their daily excursions. They will have dinners with the family.

Do I need to go on the daily excursions?
No. There will be a central drop off place in a nearby area where all of the students will meet each morning to go on their tours. You may be able to carpool with other host families for pick up and drop off.

Can I host more than one student?
Yes, families are encouraged to host two students if they are able to do so, and/or to host during both sessions.

For more information, please contact Jaime Petruccelli at 619-339-4635 (call or text) or email at jaimepetruccelli@gmail.com.  I look forward to being an ambassador with you this summer!

April 2018 Calendar – Alpine Library

Happy April, everyone! We have exciting news at the library this month! We are proud to announce that the Alpine Library is selected to host Native Voices: Native Peoples’ Concepts of Health and Illness, a traveling exhibition created by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). Native Voices was displayed at the NLM headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, from 2011 to 2015. Through a partnership with the American Library Association (ALA), the exhibition is now traveling to libraries throughout the United States, and will be on display at the Alpine Library throughout the month of April.  We are thrilled to bring the exhibition to our community and to hopefully broaden people’s perspectives about this fascinating topic.

The Alpine Library was chosen to host the exhibition through a competitive application process; as part of the award, we received a small grant to host a series of public programs, plus additional funding from the Alpine Library Friends Association. These will include a showing of Our People. Our Culture. Our History, a documentary about the Sycuan band of the Kumeyaay Nation, with a panel discussion afterwards with tribal members, (April 19 at 6 pm) and a talk by Kenneth Cohen, author of Honoring the Medicine: the Essential Guide to Native American Healing (April 26 at 6 pm). The San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum will also bring their mobile exhibit on Kumeyaay culture for kids to explore (April 13, 3:30 to 4 pm).

The exhibit will kick off at 6 pm on April 5 at the Alpine Library with an unveiling of the exhibition. We will be honored to host Chairwoman Gwendolyn Parada of  the La Posta Band of Mission Indians and the Southern Indian Health Council, and Secretary Charlene Worrell of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, who will provide opening remarks, as well as a performance by Kumeyaay bird singers H. Paul “Junior” Cuero and Ral Christman. We hope you can join us as we introduce this exciting educational exhibit to our community. To learn more and view content from the exhibition, visit http://www.nlm.nih.gov/nativevoices.

The BUNNY TRAIN! A Unique Experience for the Whole Family – March 31, 2018

Looking for a new way to celebrate the Easter holiday with your family? Look no further than the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo Ca!

The celebration kicks off with a train ride.  The Easter Bunny will board the train and visit with all of the passengers on the train before it travels through San Diego’s beautiful east county  mountains.  After enjoying the 45-minute journey, the train stops at the Museum’s Display Building where more fun awaits.

Two Easter egg hunting areas will be open for the children.  One is geared towards our smallest travelers with eggs in plain sight; the other takes up the entire Display Building with eggs carefully hidden by the Easter Bunny.  The children may turn in the plastic eggs they find to Museum volunteers for sweets and other prizes. The best part – entrance into the Display Building and both Easter egg hunts is included in the price of your train tickets!

The Bunny Trains and associated events run on the dates listed below.  Tickets can be purchased in person the day of the event at the Campo Depot.  Advance reservations are not required for this event.

You can find more information at psrm.org/bunny-train.  The very last day of this event is Saturday, March 31.  Trains run at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm.
